Simple Composting

For Father's Day last year I got the coolest gift, a stainless steel compost pail. I'm sure this was a nice way for my wife to let me know she was tired of the (covered) tupperware of rotting fruits and veggies I kept on the counter. I got the message and I got a new pail. Win-win!

Everything and anything compostable goes in the pail. Mainly coffee grounds and filters, fruit and vegetable scraps. Once it's filled I dump it in the mulch pile in the backyard. This happens roughly every 3-4 days. During the winter this was a challenge. I cheated by putting a 5 gallon container on the deck. I would empty the smaller pail into the larger one and dumping that one every two weeks or so. I don't know the exact weight but it had to be at least 10 pounds in material. My guess is I am composting about 20-30 pounds of "garbage" A MONTH! That goes even higher during the summer when our fruit and veggie consumption triples.

If you have the room to compost this is a no-brainer and you probably do so already. If you are tight on space, you should check out these compost bins.

Gardener's Supply wrote a nice article on how to choose the right composter for you. Nothing beats fresh mulch.

I've been thinking of getting one of the outdoor compost bins. Just hope they are raccoon and squirrel proof. Will check it out.
